5 THINGS TO DO AT

ANDREW JACKSON STATE PARK

In Lancaster County, Andrew Jackson State Park offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and family-friendly activities. Named after the seventh President of the United States, this park provides a perfect getaway for history buffs, nature enthusiasts, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

To help you plan your visit, here are five activities you should try when visiting Andrew Jackson State Park.

1. Get a History Lesson at the Museum and Schoolhouse

One of the key attractions at Andrew Jackson State Park is its museum and replica schoolhouse. The museum offers a deep dive into the early life of Andrew Jackson and the region’s history. With artifacts, exhibits and interpretive displays, visitors can learn all about American History, especially the Revolutionary War. (The museum is open Saturday-Sunday 1pm-5pm and Monday-Friday by appointment.)

Adjacent to the museum, the replica schoolhouse provides a tangible connection to the past by showcasing what education was like during Andrew Jackson’s time. The schoolhouse offers a glimpse into the educational practices of the late 1700s, with period-appropriate furnishings and materials. This part of the park helps visitors understand the foundational experiences that shaped Jackson’s early years and gives a vivid picture of life in colonial America. (The schoolhouse opens in mid-March and closes in November. Its hours are Saturday 1pm-5pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm.)

As you explore the park, make sure to visit the impressive statues and monuments dedicated to Andrew Jackson. The most notable is the larger-than-life equestrian statue of a young Andrew Jackson, which captures the spirit and determination of the man who would become the nation’s seventh president.

2. Explore the Nature Trails

Andrew Jackson State Park is home to two well-maintained nature trails: Crawford Trail and Garden of the Waxhaws Trail. Both trails are about one-mile loops, perfect for hiking, birdwatching and simply enjoying the natural surroundings.

The Crawford Trail is an easy 1.1-mile loop that starts to the right of the Meeting House. This dirt trail will lead you through many oak, cedar, and pine trees in an undeveloped area of the park. On this trail, you will hear many singing birds and may encounter animals like deer, rabbits and other wildlife.

The Garden of the Waxhaws Trail is a moderately difficult hike. This 1-mile loop starts to the left of the fishing dock and leads to fishing access and beautiful views of the lake. On this hike, you will cross a grassy causeway over a dam and walk through a mixed pine and hardwood forest.

3. Enjoy a Picnic by the Lake

Andrew Jackson State Park features an 18-acre lake that provides a great backdrop for a relaxing picnic. Enjoy a picnic in one of the two picnic shelters, one of which overlooks the lake. Shelter One holds up to 75 people and seats 60, while Shelter Two holds up to 65 and seats 48.  Whether you bring a homemade feast or simple snacks, dining with views of the park’s natural surroundings is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

4. Go Fishing or Boating

The park’s lake is stocked with bass, bream, catfish and other species, making it a popular spot for fishing. You can fish from the shore, use the handicap-accessible fishing pier, or rent a jon boat or canoe from the park office for a more immersive experience.

Private boats that can be hand-carried from the parking lot to the lake are allowed, though gasoline motors are prohibited to maintain the lake’s peaceful ambiance. Boating allows for a peaceful way to appreciate the natural beauty and maybe catch some fish while you’re at it. Remember to check for any required fishing permits and follow park guidelines.

5. Set Up Camp

For those who love to sleep surrounded by nature, camping at Andrew Jackson State Park is a must. The park offers 25 campsites, five of which are paved sites to accommodate RVs up to 36 feet; 20 gravel sites accommodate RVs up to 30 feet.

Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, providing a perfect setting for a cozy evening under the stars. Modern restroom facilities with hot showers are conveniently located nearby. There is also a primitive group area that can hold up to 50 people. Camping at the park allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and peacefulness of the area, making for a memorable outdoor adventure.
