4 THINGS TO DO AT GOODALE STATE PARK

Goodale State Park in Kershaw County is one of the most underrated state parks in South Carolina, offering a variety of outdoor activities. Just a short drive from Downtown Camden, this 763-acre park features a 140-acre lake surrounded by cypress trees, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of exploration.

 Here are four must-do activities to make the most of your visit to Goodale State Park.

1. Explore the Paddling Trail

Two of the most unique features of Goodale State Park are Adams Mill Pond and Pine Tree Creek, which you can explore by canoe or kayak. A 3-mile, out-and-back canoe trail winds through the creek’s cypress trees and aquatic plants, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the wilderness not so far from the city.

The park’s 140-acre lake is also dotted with ancient cypress trees, creating another great paddling experience. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at the park, or you can bring your own. As you paddle through the waters, keep an eye out for wildlife such as turtles, herons and even the occasional alligator. 

2. Hike the Nature Trail

Goodale State Park has a 2-mile loop nature trail that winds through the park’s diverse landscapes, including a forest of pine, oak and rhododendrons. The trail is relatively easy, making it suitable for hikers of all ages and fitness levels. As you hike, take the time to enjoy the surroundings and the native flora and fauna. Watch for a variety of wildlife, including wood ducks, blue herons, turtles, snakes and more.

3. Catch Some Fish

The park’s lake is well-stocked with a variety of fish species, including bass, bream and catfish. Whether you prefer fishing from the shore or a boat, the lake offers plenty of opportunities to reel in a good catch. There’s a small pier available, providing easy access for anglers of all ages and skill levels. (Pro tip: Don’t forget your fishing gear and a valid South Carolina fishing license.)

4. Play at the Playground

For families visiting Goodale State Park, the playground guarantees fun for the little ones and is  conveniently located near picnic areas.
