With various water access points, agri-tourism destinations, and scenic state parks, Chester County offers opportunities for both outdoor adventure and relaxation. Visitors often gravitate to the Catawba River or Landsford Canal State Park. The 523-ace Chester State Park is a haven for hiking, picnicking, boating, and fishing. From enjoying annual festivals such as the Flopeye Fish Festival in Great Falls or Lily Fest at Landsford Canal State Park to stopping by local farms for u-pick produce, Chester County is a breath of fresh air from life’s hustle and bustle.
The quiet 523-acre Chester State Park provides a tranquil setting that is enjoyed by campers, day users and nature lovers. The park’s 160-acre lake offers excellent fishing opportunities by land, boat, or fishing piers. Public boat ramp, boat rentals, picnic shelters, playgrounds, nature trails, and the Lakeview Hall meeting facility are available daily. Also available are a 27-hole Disc Golf course, 25 campsites with water & electricity and 2 camper cabins. The campsite has a bathhouse with hot showers, a sewage disposal station, a picnic area, a playground, a fishing lake, fishing boats and canoes for rent, a tournament-level disc golf course, nature trails. Admission charged.
The last of a dozen 19th century South Carolina river canals, Landsford Canal State Park has all of its major features intact. The park has a trail along the canal and a Lockkeeper’s house which contains interpretive exhibits on the canal system in South Carolina.
Landsford Canal State Park is also home to the largest outcropping of rocky shoals spider lilies, so be sure to plan a visit between mid-May and mid-June to see them blooming out of the Catawba River.
