Charming inns, tasty restaurants, grist mills, outdoor adventures, and historic sites invite visitors from near and far. Kershaw County is comprised of several quaint towns, including Boykin, where the official dog of South Carolina was first bred. Camden, the county seat, is where a vibrant downtown attracts foodies, antiquers, equine enthusiasts (the Carolina Cup is held in Camden annually) and history buffs alike.
To help you plan your trip, we created a list of five must-do activities when you visit.
1. Stay the Night at a Charming Inn
Check in to one of Kershaw County’s charming bed and breakfasts. Four Oaks Inn is nestled in Camden, just minutes from the quaint downtown. The home was built in the 1860s and is set along a quiet, tree-lined street. Four Oaks Inn’s grounds feature a sparkling pool that is perfect for a stay during the warmer months. During cooler seasons, guests may find themselves tucked away in the inn’s many alcoves, which are great for napping, snuggling up with a good book or enjoying a glass of wine.
In Rembert, South Carolina, Old McCaskill’s Farm B&B invites a cozy getaway amidst a beautiful setting. Guests’ rooms all feature unique hardwood floors, walk-in closets and private bathrooms. Visitors are free to roam the grounds to see the animals on the farm and simply enjoy the fresh air.
2. Dine at Delicious Restaurants
Enjoy the flavors of Kershaw County by dining at the area’s delicious restaurants. For lunch, grab a bite at a local’s favorite in Camden: Everyday Gourmet. This 1985-eatery, open only for lunch during the week, serves fresh soups, sandwiches, salads and more. Also, a great lunch spot, The Loopy Lemon Café, an eclectic café downtown, combines global and southern cuisine.
For dinner, start with a glass of wine from Broad & Vine in Camden. This cozy wine bar features an automated wine system that houses more than 30 wines from around the world. Right down the street are Salud Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Lounge and BColson’s, known for steaks, fresh seafood, and premium spirits.
Enjoy a meal with a scenic view at Mill Pond Steakhouse in Rembert, about a 15-minute drive from Camden. Order a delicious steak or other American-style fare and a glass of red wine, and observe the variety of wildlife that visit the pond, including alligators and waterfowl.
3. Visit Historic Sites
Kershaw County does not lack in historic sites and significance. Discover the Historic Camden Campus, where you can explore a national historic district and an open-air museum. The Revolutionary War Visitor Center tells the powerful story of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War and is the gateway to the history that can be discovered in Camden and Kershaw County.
4. Explore Goodale State Park
Cypress trees line the spring-fed lake at Goodale State Park, offering a gorgeous destination for boating and fishing. The park features a nature trail and canoe trail, which allows visitors to get up close to the native flora and fauna. Some may even argue that this state park offers some of the best kayaking in South Carolina.
5. Shop For Treasures
Shop for hard-to-find collectibles or local goods at one of Kershaw County’s shops or antique stores. Peruse treasures spread throughout Menagerie Antiques & Collectibles, Sterling Fox Antiques and Camden Antiques Market. Or head to Three Sisters Essentials, an environmentally friendly local grassroots market, for a variety of local products, including jams and coffee beans. Bookworms may also want to scan the shelves at Books on Broad for interesting reads, new and used alike.
