Nature Itinerary
Plan Your Nature Adventure
One thing you hear over and over from visitors of the Olde English District: “It’s beautiful.” If you love the outdoors, then this is the place for you. If you have limited time on your stay, this two-day itinerary will introduce you to some must-see spots.
Day 1:
01 Morning
Start your day with a visit to Cheraw State Park, the first state park in South Carolina. Enjoy the serene beauty of Lake Juniper by renting a kayak, canoe, or pedal boat and cruise through the cypress wetlands and white cedars that surround this 360-acre lake.
Fuel your body after a morning of water activities at The River’s Edge, which features classic American fare. Follow that with some coffee or ice cream—or both—at The Caffeinated Cow.
02 Afternoon
After l lunch, it’s time to explore more natural playgrounds of the Olde English District. Goodale State Park in Camden is great for those who prefer water excursions through the wilderness. The park’s 3-mile canoe trail is a relaxing paddle through the forest, offering scenic views of plants and wildlife. You may even spot an alligator, bald eagle or osprey along the way.
Dinner options on Broad Street in Camden are numerous. Salud Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Lounge offers a flavor-packed menu offering a variety of Mexican cuisine and a large selection of tequila and margaritas. Sam Kendall’s is another great option. Steeplechase Sports Bar & Grill offers salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. Meanwhile, BColson’s is the place to treat yourself to a juicy steak or seafood dish. Or drive a few miles to Rembert for a thoughtful meal amidst a scenic setting at Mill Pond Steakhouse.
As the day comes to a close, you can find a campsite to harmonize with nature as you rest and recharge amidst the calming sounds of the outdoors. If sleeping indoors is more your style, try the elegant and historic Four Oaks Inn or perhaps the convenience of Hampton Inn Camden or Holiday Inn Express & Suites.
Day 2:
01 Morning
Start your journey with a pick-me-up cup of coffee from either Books on Broad or American Patriot Coffee Company. Once you’re caffeinated, head to Lake Wateree State Park. Enjoy a fulfilling morning paddling around the expansive 13,000-acre lake by kayak or canoe, or try your hand at fishing for striped bass and other freshwater favorites.
Get ready to refuel. Head down to the Wagon Wheel Restaurant (cash/check only) for a home-cooked meal—the fried squash is a crowd-pleaser. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, the Cake Lady Café around the corner offers a delicious selection of sandwiches, soups and salads.
02 Afternoon
Your nature excursion continues at Landsford Canal State Park, home to the world’s largest population of rocky shoals spider lilies, a rare flower species found predominantly in the Southeast. If you visit during their blooming season (May through mid-June), paddling down the Catawba River will yield an unforgettable view. This calm waterway is perfect for paddlers of all skill levels (12 years or older). Otherwise, gather your friends for a leisurely stroll to an overlook where you can see the blooms.
End your day with a well-deserved meal at The Pump House, a Southern-inspired American restaurant offering stunning views of the Catawba River. For wine enthusiasts, Grapevine boasts lovely riverside views and around 30 wines available by the glass. If you’re in the mood for some Mexican cuisine, Tony’s Cantina Mexican Grill is the place to be, offering everything from fajitas and enchiladas to signature margaritas and cocktails.
Wrap up the day by resting your head at either the Courtyard by Marriott in Fort Mill or the Cambria Hotel Fort Mill. Both are conveniently located near the day’s activities and come equipped with plenty of amenities for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
